The most defining moments of poker

After Cada’s recent historical win at the 2009 WSOP, it made it me sit back and wonder what have been the more defining moments in the life and times of online poker.  Just a short 10 years ago, playing poker online was virtually unheard of (pardon the pun) and confined to the realms of your kitchen table or Sin City. But today online poker is something of a thriving industry. I would have to rate Chris Moneymaker’s victory when he come out of nowhere to win the WSOP Main Event in 2003 as one of the defining moments in online poker. It was nothing short of a catalyst for online-poker-mania. It was so incredible not only because he was an amateur (in fact, just an account from Tennessee) amongst world-class talent, but because he got into the Main Event with only a buy-in of $40. This inspired thousands of players who began to realise that their dreams could come true.  After the 2003 WSOP, poker rooms and televised poker really took off and proliferated. I think it’s fair to say that Moneymaker singlehandedly created the boom in online poker with many dubbing the phenomena the ‘Moneymaker Effect’.
